A society for railway historians and enthusiasts hosted the illustrated talk about Buriton’s railway history when Doug Jones and Mike Attrill repeated their presentation in West Byfleet early in 2026.
Information about the talk, originally given in Buriton some months earlier, was spotted by members of the South Western Circle, who asked Doug and Mike to repeat it at their Annual General Meeting.
The South Western Circle is the historical society dedicated to the London & South Western Railway (LSWR), which operated the Portsmouth Direct Line. With over 500 members, the society supports research and shares knowledge of the LSWR through publications and events.
The meeting in West Byfleet attracted a strong audience of around 40–50 members, with more joining online via Zoom.
Doug and Mike explored Buriton’s connections with the first 100 years of the Portsmouth Direct Line, using pictures and information from the Heritage Bank archives as well as some new findings.
The event also proved to be a two-way exchange, with society members able to help with the identification and approximate dates of some of the Heritage Bank photographs as well as providing some more images and information.
A recording of the talk is available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uxnyrjeLAQ) and information about the original talk can be found here: Railway evening was just the ticket – Buriton Heritage
