Sarah Matthews, living near Wantage in Oxfordshire, has sent this splendid photograph of children at Buriton School – believed to have been taken in about 1912.
The school photo includes three members of the Holloway family: Marie Louise (known as Queen or Queenie; born in 1900), Albert Edward (known as Bert; born in 1901) and Eveline Violet (known as Dolly; born in 1905).
Their parents, Charles and Bertha Holloway, were a gardener and domestic servant at Buriton House and lived nearby until about 1921 when Charles died. He had supplied flowers to Buriton House and decorated dining tables there with dressed pheasant, flowers etc and Bertha had helped domestically.
Charles and Bertha’s eldest son, Reg, died of disease in WW1 in March 1917 whilst serving south-east of Baghdad. Information about Reg is already featured in the Heritage Bank publication: ‘Buriton and the First World War: Through Local Eyes’.
Sarah Matthews is a grand-daughter of another sibling, Henrietta Daisy Holloway, who married William Hobbs in Buriton in September 1920. The Holloway children in the school photograph are her great Aunts and a great Uncle.
The only other children identified on the school photo are Rose Bunce, Nell Shepherd and Nell’s brother (un-named).
